Botanica Brasilis: Sugarcane II (2026)
Botanica Brasilis: Sugarcane II (2026) forms part of Botanica Brasilis, an ongoing, long-term series asking how painting changes when its process follows the temporal rhythms of cultivation.
The second painting introduces a stronger internal structure. Three upright stems establish a clear vertical rhythm while remaining responsive to the slow accumulation of translucent pigment. The image appears more coherent than in earlier works, although its edges continue to shift within the weave of the linen, resisting complete resolution.
The open field of flax linen remains integral to the work. Image and support exist in continuous relation, encouraging the eye to move between painted form and unpainted cloth. The painting develops through repeated applications separated by periods of waiting, allowing time to become visible within the surface itself.
Presented as a suspended scroll, the work emphasises the continuity of the linen and the measured pace through which the image gradually takes shape.
