Botanica Brasilis: Sugarcane I (2026)
Botanica Brasilis: Sugarcane I (2026) is part of Botanica Brasilis, an ongoing, long-term series asking how painting changes when its process follows the temporal rhythms of cultivation.
Remembered from rural Brazil, the sugarcane appears tentatively, its slender stems and leaves emerging from successive translucent layers without fully settling into definition. The image remains visibly open, allowing earlier traces to coexist with later decisions. Instead of presenting a completed description of the plant, the painting holds it in a state of gradual appearance.
The surrounding field of flax linen plays an active role in the composition. The textile is left largely uninterrupted, giving equal presence to painted form and material support. Looking moves between the sugarcane and the linen itself, allowing attention to unfold slowly across the surface.
Suspended as a linen scroll, the work preserves the physical character of the textile while reinforcing the quiet, measured pace through which the image comes into view.
